In today’s world, it can be hard to remember to love who you are. Social media has a lot to do with this. For young women, it can be challenging to scroll through Instagram or Facebook and not compare yourself to others.

The thoughts we have that are negative towards the way we look or act are just things we make up in our heads. We start to feel bad for ourselves instead of focusing on what we want to do in our own life and how it shouldn’t matter what others think.

Everyone has a different definition of “self-love.” I think physical health is important, and is a key factor in making your mind clearer and healthier. When I’m feeling down about myself, the first thing I turn to is getting my health back in order because that generally plays a key role in how I feel overall.

Recently, I was listening to an interview with a doctor on the Good Life Project podcast about his book How To Be Well. Dr. Frank Lipman has studied both Western and Eastern medicine and put together six keys to a happy and healthy life. I bought this book right after I listened to the podcast and it turned out to be a really great resource for me.

Below are a few of the pillars mentioned in Dr. Lipman’s book to create wellness and happiness. Think of these pillars as ways you you can treat yo’ self, just by taking care of your physical health!

Eat well

Eating well isn’t just about losing weight. It’s helping your body function the way it’s supposed to. So cut out all the sugar and processed food, and eat real, whole foods. That is what your body was meant to handle and it will thank you for it in the long run.

There are so many types of clean eating out there, but if you are looking for a guide on why certain types of food is good for your body and mind, Dr. Lipman’s book has a whole section on eating well.

Get enough sleep

I feel like I never get enough sleep and I hear my coworkers say the same thing. It’s hard for our society today to get a full eight hours. Try to go to bed earlier or practice some tactics such as cutting out caffeine after 12:00 p.m. and staying away from electronics an hour or two before bed. Those are easy changes you can make that I found have personally helped me fall asleep and sleep better throughout the night.

Move a lot

You don’t need to be a marathon runner or sign up for a triathlon. Just move around, especially if you have a desk job. Being sedentary is the worst thing to do for your body. So before, during and after work make sure you are doing something that isn’t just sitting. Being active clears your mind and relieves stress, which is extremely important.

Self-love isn’t just about having positive thoughts about yourself, but about treating yourself with love through your actions. It’s easier to be positive when you know you are putting in the effort to making your body and mind healthy.

Physical Health and Self-Love: Why These Two Things Go Hand-In-Hand

I’m Donna and I specialize in public relations. Although my bachelor’s degree is in business marketing, I found myself pursuing PR and love it. Outside of work, I enjoy visiting new places whenever I can – the beach, the mountains, small towns or big cities. Finding ways to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle has become a recent passion of mine, although sometimes pizza prevails. I love to spend time with my dog, fiancé, family and friends, preferably with a good Cabernet in my hand.
